Fish Meal

Fish meal, a form of powder made from the cooked flesh/ byproducts of fish which is primarily used in animal feed -especially for poultry, farmed fish, swine, mink, and pets, though formerly important as a fertilizer.

Fish meal is made by cooking, pressing, drying, and grinding of fish or fish waste to which no other matter has been added. It is a solid product from which most of the water is removed and some or all of the oil is removed. Fish meal is generally sold as a powder, and is used mostly in compound foods. Four or five tons of fish are needed to manufacture one ton of dry fish meal.

Certain species of oily fish, such as menhaden, anchovy, herring, and pilchard, are the main source of fish meal and its companion product, fish oil. Fish meal can be made from almost any type of seafood, but is generally manufactured from wild-caught, small marine fish that contain a high percentage of bones and oil, and are usually deemed not suitable for direct human consumption. Virtually any fish or shellfish in the sea can be used to make fish meal.

Fish meal in diets increases feed efficiency and growth through better feed palatability, and enhances nutrient uptake, digestion, and absorption. The balanced amino acid composition of fish meal complements and provides synergistic effects with other animal and vegetable proteins in the diet to promote faster growth and reduce feeding costs.

Fish meal is an excellent source of highly digestible protein, It has high levels of essential amino acids such as methionine and lysine, and it also has a good balance of unsaturated fatty acids, certain minerals (available phosphorus), and vitamins (A, D, and B-complex). The use of fish meal is usually restricted to 5% to 10% of the content of poultry diets. Fish meal quality depends on the raw material used and on the processing method involved.

Studies have shown fish meal may improve feed conversion, reproductive performance, immune function, and overall growth.

Fish meal consists in average of between 70-72 % fish protein, 6-9% fish oil, 12-15% ash, 5-9% water and 1-2% salt.
